Three principles of CNC machining technology

2025-09-11

1. The Principle of Maximum Process Concentration and Single-Shot Positioning

In general, when machining parts on CNC machine tools, especially machining centers, processes can be concentrated to the greatest extent possible. This means that the part should complete most or all of the processes that the CNC machine can handle in a single setup. CNC machining tends to favor process concentration, which reduces the number of machine tools and workpiece setups, minimizes unnecessary positioning errors, and improves productivity. For hole systems requiring high coaxiality, the entire coaxial hole system should be machined in a single setup using sequential tool changes before machining other holes. This eliminates the effects of repeated positioning errors and improves the coaxiality of the hole system.

2. The Principle of Roughing First, Finishing Later

In CNC machining, processes should be divided based on factors such as part accuracy, rigidity, and deformation. Separate roughing and finishing operations should be followed. That is, complete roughing first, followed by semi-finishing and finishing. For a given surface, the sequence should be roughing, semi-finishing, and finishing. During roughing, the machine tool and tool performance should be fully utilized, ensuring machining quality, tool durability, and the rigidity of the machine tool-fixture-tool-workpiece system. A maximum number of cuts should be used to achieve a uniform stock clearance before finishing. Finishing primarily focuses on ensuring part accuracy and surface quality, so the final contour of the part should typically be achieved with the final continuous finish cut. To ensure machining quality, a finishing allowance of 0.2-0.6mm is generally recommended. A period of time should be allowed between roughing and finishing to allow the part to fully recover from any deformation after roughing before proceeding to finish, thereby improving machining accuracy.

3. Principle of "Near-end, Far-end" and "Surface-end, Hole-end"

Based on the distance of the workpiece from the reference point, areas closer to the reference point should generally be machined first, and areas farther from the reference point should be machined later. This shortens tool travel and reduces idle time. For turning, the "near-end, far-end" approach also helps maintain the rigidity of the blank or semi-finished product and improves cutting conditions. When machining parts that require both flat milling and boring, the order is to mill the flat surface first and then bore the hole. Because flat milling creates greater cutting forces and can easily cause deformation, milling the surface first and then boring the hole allows the part time to recover. This helps ensure hole machining accuracy. Furthermore, if boring the hole first and then milling the flat surface, burrs and flash will form at the hole mouth, affecting assembly.
